“The magic here is too layered,” Quinn said as the Makkai settled and Bella had joined them to hear what Quinn had found. “It isn’t just perception and exorcism. It’s old, and it’s deep.”

“Blood magic?” Dawn asked and Quinn looked over at her.

“Where’d you get that?” she asked.

“Is it?” Bella redirected.

“Could be,” Quinn said, glancing at Dawn again.

“It is,” Dawn said, standing. “And it’s in the walls.”

“I didn’t get that specific yet,” Quinn said. “I figured you would want to know that we’re up against an evil witch, but I can see that I should have just stayed here and let Dawn tell us.”

Bella sighed at her.

“What did you find?”

Quinn stuck her jaw out.

“The walls are warded,” she said. “And so are the floors and the ceilings. You try to push magic through it without knowing exactly what ward you’re trying to get through, you’re going to bounce. Hard.”

“What else?” Bella asked.

“Eloise said that they wired the house for power,” Becca said. “How is that going to interact with all that magic?”

Quinn tipped her head to the side, looking at Becca around Bella and raised her eyebrows.

“Why don’t you ask Dawn?”

“I’m asking you,” Bella said. “The magic you found. How is it going to react to modern electricity?”

Quinn shrugged, only reluctantly turning back to Bella again.

“I don’t think the men would have known it was there,” she said. “It’s crafty.”

“You got that right,” Billy said, coming into the room.

“Come see,” Jackson said, and the tribe converged, following Jackson and the others down a dim hallway and into the back of the building.

The house was warm everywhere from the seasonal heat, but as they traveled after Jackson, there was a feeling that the air was cooling, growing clammy the way that humid air inevitably did, and Becca shivered as her skin grew damp.

“Root cellar,” Quinn said as Jackson put his shoulder into a door and shoved it open.

“You’d think,” Billy said. Dawn knelt in the doorway and Becca waited, watching as she lay a pair of simple crystals and lit them with a touch. The room revealed under the bright white light, unextraordinary and bare. The walls were dirt up to shoulder height, where horizontal boards held hooks for herbs and shelves for cans. Becca could imagine what the room had looked like when it was full of crates and barrels and other food. They must not have been far from the kitchen.

“I’m waiting,” Bella said, sounding just a fraction amused. Clearly there was a story here. Billy and Jackson glanced at each other, and Jackson held up a pair of hands like an usher, opening the floor to Billy.

“You’re the one who figured it out,” Jackson said. “You should tell her.”

Billy clapped his hands and rubbed his palms together, a dry, raspy noise that Becca knew well.

“That wall is four feet too close,” Billy said.

“It’s dirt,” Quinn said, rising to the bait. Billy nodded with a grin.

“Right you are, but the next room has a floor this high,” he said, motioning with his hand right under his ribs, “and that’s got to have a foundation.
